What is minimalism in art?

In a modern world filled with visual noise, minimalism in art is becoming a real breath of fresh air. It is a trend that values simplicity, clean forms, balance and silence between lines. In minimalist painting, less is more. That is why this aesthetic resonates with the viewer on a special, often emotional level.

Minimalism in painting is a conscious reduction of compositions to the bare essentials. This is the rejection of unnecessary details, distracting elements in order to convey the main thing – an idea, mood, color or rhythm.

Minimalism can be:

  • Abstract – where the main role is played by forms and space;
  • Philosophical – where the composition seems to invite the viewer to meditation;
  • Emotional – when the entire spectrum of feelings is conveyed through one brushstroke.

My vision of minimalism

In my work, minimalism often acts not as a style, but as a way of thinking. It is an internal purification and an attempt to leave only the essence. Some of my paintings are:

🖼️ “Cherries on a light background” – a delicate composition of only a few strokes, conveying peace and comfort;

🖼️ “lemones” – a work with an emphasis on light, form and space;

🖼️ “Lonely toast” – an almost empty space with a single object that gains strength due to isolation;

  • speak the language of silence. They are available on ualinart.com or my Instagram @skorokhoartline.

Minimalism in my case is also a deep love for simple things: food, nature, cats, and the very everyday, which becomes poetry if you look at it with love.

Minimalism and Ukrainian Contemporary Art

Ukrainian artists are also increasingly turning to minimalism as a form of visual expression:

Zhanna Kadyrova — works in the space of sculpture and installation, often uses minimalist forms with architectural allusions;

Mykyta Kadan — uses a laconic language in painting and graphics, combining social criticism with plasticity;

Alevtina Kakhidze — in her drawings often uses a minimalist line and simple language that seems easy, but has a deep subtext.

Their example is inspiring, and I am happy to be part of this new wave, in which minimalism sounds modern, relevant and deeply human.

Why do buyers appreciate minimalist painting?

It does not overload the space, easily combines with any interior;

It allows the viewer to read its meaning, without imposing;

It is universal — minimalism “speaks” all languages.
