When a Sketch Becomes a Misunderstanding

A few days ago, I had a conversation with a potential client on Etsy. The Art Lover wanted a painting of specific, beautiful gift. Something emotional, something personal, didn’t know the exact style, but sent nice references. So I did what many contemporary artists now do: I quickly generated a visual draft using AI — just to align our vision. And something unexpected happened.
Client replied that she didn’t want AI at all, wanted real painting and was right!
But also — there was a misunderstanding.
I try to see the situation from potential bayer side and help us to understand each other better 🤗
Let’s Be Honest: AI Is Not the Artwork

Here’s something important:
AI is not my art.
AI is not the final piece.
AI is not what you receive.
It’s just a conversation shortcut.
Instead of spending days exchanging messages like:
“Maybe softer colors?”
“Maybe different composition?”“Maybe more light?”
We can see the direction instantly.
Think of it as a digital sketch on a napkin — not the painting itself.
Why Artists Use AI (Responsibly)

In reality, AI helps both sides:
For the client:
You see your idea faster
You feel more confident before ordering
You avoid disappointment
For the artist:
Clearer understanding of your vision
Less risk of misinterpretation
More time spent on actual painting, not guessing
Because the real work — the important work — happens later.
What Real Painting Actually Takes

A true hand-painted artwork is not instant. It requires:
Time to develop compositionLayering and drying
(especially oil painting)
Emotional involvemen
Physical process — texture, brushwork, imperfections
A real sketch alone can take several days.
That’s why detailed custom work is part of the paid process.
The Difference Between AI Art and Real Art
Let’s be clear:

AI generates images.
An artist creates meaning.
AI can imitate style.
But it cannot:
feel your story
choose intentionally imperfect strokes
translate emotion into texture
That’s where real art begins.
My Approach: Honest, Transparent, Human

When I use AI, I use it:
only for early idea exploration
never as a final product
always as a tool for communication
Every final painting I create is:
fully hand-painted
unique
made with care and intention
A Better Way to Work Together

If you are ordering a custom artwork, here’s the best process:
1.Share your idea or references
2.We define direction (optionally with quick visual draft)
3.I create a real sketch (paid stage)
4.You approve
5.I paint your artwork
Simple. Clear. No surprises.
Final Thought
Technology changes tools.
But it doesn’t replace the artist.
Because in the end,you are not buying an image.
You are choosing:a persona visiona way of seeing the world
And that can never be automated.
🔎 Bonus for Those Who Read Until the End
If you’re ordering custom art online, here are a few practical things to watch for:
🚩 1. Prices That Don’t Match Reality
If a “hand-painted oil artwork” costs suspiciously little — be careful.
Real painting takes time, materials, and experience.
➡️ Extremely low prices often mean:
printed copies, AI-generated imagesmass-produced work
🚩 2. “Too Perfect” Portfolio
every artwork looks:
perfectly smooth
perfectly smoothwithout any texturelike a photo or 3D
➡️ Look for:
brushstrokes
texture
small imperfections (these are a good sign)
🚩 3. No Process, No Proof
A real artist can usually show:
work in progress
studio photos
materials
If there’s nothing behind the final image — ask questions.
🚩 4. Same Style, Endless Variations
If a shop sells:
hundreds of worksall in different styles
but all look similar “digital perfect”
➡️ This may be AI or reselling.
🚩 5. No Clear Communication
Be careful if the seller:
avoids answering questions
cannot explain their process
pushes you to buy quickly
A real artist will clarify, not rush.
✅ What a Trustworthy Artist Does
A reliable artist will:
explain their process clearlybe
honest about timing and pricing
show real examples of their work
communicate openly
And most importantly —they won’t be afraid of your questions.

💛 Final Thought 2🙂
The goal is not just to buy art.
The goal is to feel safe choosing the person who creates it.
Because behind every real painting —
there is a real human.
